Practicing Ut Prosim this Holiday Season

27 November, 2018 0 comments Leave a comment

Hello Hokies! ‘Tis me, Dottie!  With the holiday season quickly approaching I figured I’d give you an insight on one of my favorite holiday traditions: giving back to the community!  Here at Virginia Tech our very own university motto is Ut Prosim which is Latin for “That I May Serve.”  This motto and the Principles of Community stands as a foundation for the development of personal relationships, physical spaces, and intercultural experiences, which create strong communities such as ours here in Blacksburg.  These communities compel students to understand and develop a value system that will guide their decisions and enable them to offer themselves as responsible citizens even after they move on from Blacksburg.

I know you’re wondering, “Dottie! Where can I practice this amazing motto our university has?!” Well, my fellow Hokies, you’re in luck!  Here are my three favorite ways to give back to the community during holiday season.

  1. Spend Some Time or Donate to the Interfaith Food Pantry

One of the best ways to give back this holiday season is to give some of your time or even spare food to the local food pantry!  Founded in 1987, the Interfaith Food Pantry has proudly served families of Blacksburg for years.  It’s run entirely by volunteers and all needs are met through cash and food donations.  You can volunteer your time at the food pantry or drop off food donations to families in need.  Information about their location and ways to get into contact with board members can be found here on their website! http://newrivercommunityaction.org/IFP/about-us/

  1. Hangout with Santa at the Community Christmas Store

Just a quick drive down to Roanoke will bring you to the Community Christmas Store which focuses on families with children and seniors who aren’t as fortunate as others.  The empty building transforms into a mini-department store each year, complete with Christmas decorations and a festive atmosphere.  Recipient families receive goods such as a new outfit, or toy for the child, while the child’s family receives a new household item.  The store is operated solely by volunteers so the more the merrier!  Grab some of your friends and drive to Roanoke to help give back to the community in a fun and festive way!  https://rvgives.givebig.org/c/rvgives/a/roanokevalleyccs

  1. Give Back to the Seniors at Warm Hearth

Some of us Hokies live away from home, so that means we don’t get to see our grandparents as much as we’d like.  What’s a better way to feel at home than to spend some time with the local seniors at Warm Hearth here in Blacksburg! With more than 40 years of experience caring for seniors, Warm Hearth Village is the New River Valley’s only comprehensive, nonprofit retirement community.  Located within the view of Virginia Tech with lots of recreational opportunities and events, it’s the perfect place to spend your free time on the weekends.  Besides, the holiday season is the perfect time to make relationships with memories that’ll last a lifetime! http://www.retire.org

There you have it Hokies! Pick one of these amazing opportunities or maybe do all three and enjoy yourself while giving back to the community this holiday season!

Until Next Time,

Dottie

Dottie's Holiday Gift Guide for Christmas 2018

06 December, 2017 0 comments Leave a comment

Hi ya'll, Dottie here.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Although every day is great in Blacksburg, Hokie holiday season is the best time of all. However, sometimes it’s really hard to figure out what gift to give your special Hokie. Sometimes, it’s hard to decide whether to make a gift from the heart, buy something your Hokie needs, or purchase something your Hokie will truly love. Struggling? Well worry no more, my feathered friends,  Below is my holiday gift guide full of gifts that every Hokie will love.

That’s right, you can take me or one of my family member’s home for Christmas. Not only would we love to spend the Holidays with you, but we would also love to be a part of your flock family. We even look festive in Holiday hats! We’re sure your favorite Hokie would love to have us. We can hang out in your office or home, we make great company.

All Hokies must face the dreadful wind of the Drillfield; it’s an inevitable feature of Hokie life. Blacksburg winters are cold, windy and hard. Get your Hokie a hoodie to protect his or her ears, face and body from the harsh winter wind. Trust me, your Hokie will appreciate this thoughtful and useful gift.

One of the best things about Virginia Tech is its size. It’s such a large campus. However, during heated summer days, walking all over campus can get rough. Hokies get thirsty with every turn. Luckily, Virginia Tech has water bottle stations all over campus. However, these stations are no good if your Hokie doesn’t have a water bottle! Come summer time, your Hokie will appreciate this necessity.

Need a stocking stuffer? A thoughtful gift for that Blacksburg local or Hokie at heart that has everything? Why not get them a postcard book? This gift is useful and fun for any Hokie lover. The postcard book is filled with pictures of of the original flock members. Your gift recipient will love the thoughtful gift because it reminds them of home.

One of the trendy fads of today is wearing Alex and Ani bracelets. These cute bracelets are price friendly and are made from recycled materials right here in America. Almost every girl on campus has at least one of these bracelets. They also make great accessories at your next alumni tailgate.  Add this to your Hokie’s collection by purchasing a few more, or add this to your own Hokie wish list.

Are you into meaningful gifts? I know I am! Giving someone a gift that brings tears is the best feeling in the world. One way to get this response is by creating a Hokie T-shirt quilt, especially if your Hokie is a senior. Take your Hokies VT t-shirts, sew them together, and watch their eyes light up on Christmas morning.  They won’t be disappointed. You can even add a Gobble de Art t-shirt to the t-shirt mix remind them of their fun Blacksburg home.

The good thing about Virginia Tech is its vibrant school colors. These colors are in style year-round! If you’re feeling crafty, you can easily make a Hokie a wreath for a Blacksburg door. This wreath can be hung year round, and every time your Hokie sees it, they’ll think of you.

This book is a great gift or stocking stuffer. They are great for those who have lived in Blacksburg for years, are new to the town or have moved away. Hokies will love this book because it serves as a memory of the special places the town has to offer. The book is chock full of pictures that children will enjoy too.

Hokie canvas crafts are the trendy thing to do. Paint the shape of Virginia or outline the shape in string and watch your creation come to life. Highlight the area of Blacksburg, fill the canvas will a cute pattern or meaningful quotes, frame it, and give it to your Hokie this holiday season. They’ll cherish this gift forever.

Of course, there are many more gifts you can get your Hokie this holiday season. I just wanted to give you a starting point. Christmas is in 19 days Hokies! It’s time to start shopping or crafting!

Xoxo,

Dottie
