Giving Back This Holiday Season

It’s the first week of December which means the holiday season is finally here! ‘Tis the season of giving. This holiday season is my favorite time of the year because it’s the perfect opportunity to give back to the local community. The spirit of giving is alive and well and there are so many ways you can make an impact on people’s lives this holiday season!

Humane Society of Montgomery County

The Humane Society of Montgomery County is a no-kill animal shelter that is funded solely through donations and fundraising. They depend on volunteers to keep the animals happy until they find new homes. You can help by visiting the shelter and socializing with the animals or volunteering at their store, the Second Time Around, and helping stock shelves, price items, and help shoppers. They are always in need of cat food, cat litter, laundry detergent, paper towels, cat toys, etc., so organizing a supply drive is another great way to help! If you’re an animal lover, then this is the perfect way to volunteer this holiday season.

Giving Tree Food Pantry

The Giving Tree Food Pantry is a non-profit, all volunteer food pantry dedicated to serving the hungry in the New River Valley. You can help by hosting a food drive or assisting with food distribution on Friday nights. Friday night distribution is every Friday from 5:45PM to 7:15PM. If you are interested in donating or hosting a food drive, visit the link above to see a list of items that they are currently in need of.

Montgomery County Christmas Store

The Montgomery County Christmas Store is an all-volunteer, community-wide, nonprofit organization that assists low-income families in Montgomery County during the Christmas season. They serve local families by providing clothing, food, toys, shoes, household supplies and more. You can donate goods, host a donation drive, or volunteer your time! They have varying volunteer positions such as personal shopping assistants, packing food bags, sorting donations, helping park cars, etc. Sign up today!

VT YMCA

The YMCA works with the community and serves over 27,000 community members through their various programs. Students can volunteer for different areas of interests such as after-school programs, tutoring, senior connections, YMCA gardens, special events, and many more. Volunteering with the YMCA is a great way to build leadership skills and gain valuable experience while contributing to the community. Volunteers are joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living, and fostering a sense of social responsibility.

There are so many ways to give back this holiday season! Even if it’s just an hour of your time or a small donation, it makes a big difference in the lives of others. From hosting a donation drive to socializing with animals, you can celebrate this season with acts of kindness, generosity, and gratitude.
